Vocational High School for Woodworking and Interior Design “Joseph Vondrak” – Ruse was established more than 120 years ago.
The first and unique joinery school named National Educative Workshop opened in 1883. Very soon the school became popular even abroad taking part in international exhibitions: |
- 1906 – “Grand Prix” award and a gold medal at the exhibition in London;
- 1935 – “Grand Prix” award and a gold medal at the exhibition in Bari, Italy;
- Gold medals and Diplomas of honour at the exhibitions in Liege and Thessaloniki.
A tradition which is still being regularly followed was started way back in the 1897-1898 school year: a furniture exhibition at the end of the school year. In 1906 Joseph Vondrak – the first principal of the school – laid the foundation stone of the current building. Our students have made: the well-known “White Study” in the Euxinograd Palace, the 1930s furniture produced from foreign veneers, the bedroom suites made from pyramid mahogany, the palysander dining-room – a 1920s masterpiece, the studies made from a combination of ash-tree, rootage and walnut-tree. The carvings on the entrance door of the Holy Trinity Church (1930), the Bishop’s throne (1932) and the chancel-screen in the Virgin Mary Church in Ruse date back to early 1940s.
The high school, bearer of the “Cyril and Methodius” order 1st class, has a dignified contribution to the professional work. Remembering the traditions, VHSWID “Joseph Vondrak” is confidently building the present and drawing up the future. The educational training is being performed by a team of well-qualified teachers. Some of our graduates continue their education at universities while others prefer to make a good career in woodworking and furniture companies. The school is equipped with computer labs with unlimited Internet access, workshops for vocational training, a library with a large book-stock as well as playgrounds and a gymnasium. |
